What is a microbiome?

A microbiome is a group of microbes that live in or on a particular part of the body, such as the skin or gut. These microbes are usually helpful to the body, but can sometimes be harmful. Most are ‘symbiotic’, which means both the body and the microbes help each other out. Some, in smaller numbers, are ‘pathogenic’, which means they make disease more likely.
In a healthy body, symbiotic and pathogenic microbes live happily together without problems. But if there is a change in balance (typically brought on by illness, certain diets, or the prolonged use of some medications), normal interactions are disturbed, and the body is more likely to run the risk of disease.
That’s when microbiome supplements may help to repopulate beneficial microbes, in turn supporting your pet’s health and wellbeing.
